Three steps forward and two back

This was on Friday morning that I finally got my veneer glued.

It took some work to get the wood to bend properly. We had to use lots of clamps.

And a few more clamps

And then some more clamps

This is my professor Nils...he has catch phrases...or more just catch words. I'll be working them into my vocabulary upon my return.

Ok so, 17 clamps in all.

And here she is in the oven. I was so relieved to finally be done with this part of it. Three days of dry runs kind of got tedious.

So this was from yesterday (Saturday.) I arrived at the shop and here was the result of my molding.

We thought it looked a bit "open." Meaning that the mold was designed to allow for a certain amount of shrinkage in the joints as the wood and glue dehydrated. This unfortunately did not occur. Here we are trying to test the chairs center of gravity with someone elses seat and back.

So after deciding that I am now restarting the process (of course without the dry runs) Nils is trying out some new seating styles for my chair.

Today I was able to get a new, reshaped, mold into the oven. It will be waiting for me at 2:30 tomorrow when I go in.

This week: the magic of vacuum molding!
